Rewind is a Seattle-area
‘80s cover band with whom I played guitar from 2007-2010. All the classic synth-pop you
remember. Hungry Like the Wolf? We were, at a club near you. |
 |
Mike McAlpine and I comprise The Red Cats, an
up-and-coming musical project formed from 50% of the ashes of Stinter. Join
us on our journey of feline musical discovery.
|
 |
I played bass with Careless Hearts (vintage Americana/rock) from 2005-2006, and
on CH’s self-titled debut
album. Also sang a little backup and wrote one of the album tracks.
|
 |
I played
bass with The Sound Effect (pop
covers, parties, weddings, etc.) from 2005-2006. Also sang a little backup,
and some lead on songs the singer hated.
|
 |
I played in
an acoustic duo at Stanford from 2005-2006; as you can see we never got far
enough to have a logo or a name. We did, however, rock Stanford with
acoustic classics like “War Pigs” and “Larger Than Life”.
|
 |
I played
bass for The Greg Dunkailo Band
(alternative pop) for a few shows in 2004.
|
 |
I sang
baritone/tenor/percussion for the Stanford Harmonics from 2000-2001,
and on their 2001 album Phonoshop.
|
 |
I played
guitar for Stinter in high school (~1995).
Stinter was — and remains — the legitimate worst band on the Internet.

[mp3] Track 4 : Everything You’re Not (2:35) (Lyrics)
Some production ideas were stolen from Mike McAlpine (see below)
Also check out
The Red Cats’
Version, which has me on lead vox, guitars, and bass, and Mike on backing vocals, drums, keyboards, and production ( slightly NSFW).
[mp3] Track 6 : Another Thanks I’m Doing Fine (2:51) (Lyrics)
Written and recorded by Dan Morris, remastered by Mike McAlpine
[mp3] Track 7 : Personal Picasso (2:16) (Lyrics)
Careless Hearts also recorded a version of this song. You can listen to
the whole track — and buy our album — at cdbaby, but I’ve posted a snippet here for your listening enjoyment.
[mp3] Track 8 : For Every Dream (2:17) (Morris/Mayer) (Lyrics)
This was my entry into the John
Mayer songwriting contest. JM wrote some lyrics and posted them on the
web for folks to compose songs with. I think it’s awesome that he did that.
I’ve heard people say this was lame, but I think he’s a friggin’ genius.
[mp3] Track 10 : I was on my way home following a gathering to celebrate the new year when I noticed that I lacked a certain primate with which I had left my home earlier that evening. (2:35) (Lyrics)
The Stinter Answering Machine Series
Before Stinter was at the peak of their popularity, they were forced
into making various commercial jingles and other sorts of musical
prostitution. Among those endeavors was the now-famous “Stinter
Answering Machine Series”, known worldwide as the greatest answering
messages of all time. The Cobbler re-created those classics
and made them available to you, the Stinter web-fan.
- [mp3] Dan’s Not Here
- [mp3] There’s Nobody Home
- [mp3] Do You Want to Leave A Message?
- [mp3] I’m Not Here to Take Your Phone Call

Folks who aren't quite songwriters but aren't quite not songwriters
often accumulate piles of scraps that never see the world. In the promised
World Without Walls (someone must have a tm on that, right?), one wants to
believe you could post scraps and get great ideas from other folks out there
to help you finish songs. So... here's where I'll put scraps. If you like
it, do whatever you want with it. Steal it and use it in a Gatorade
commercial. Steal it and use it in a "the worst crap you can make with
a home computer" tutorial on Youtube. Send me thoughts if you like.
Tell me about your pile of unfinished scraps and maybe I'll steal yours and
either provide constructive feedback or use them in a Gatorade commercial.
- California Time... literally, the drums cut
out halfway in, but give some idea of what I was thinking. I also wrote this
on piano and go back and forth on whether it should be piano or guitar.
Hmmmm.
