Welcome to my Save our Sailors page. It doesn't have much on the real S.O.S. page, but it's my little bit to help the show out. Right now, it's just a collection of pictures, basically a mirror of those on the real S.O.S. page (albeit an unofficial one), but there is also a bit of personal info as to why I'm sacrificing all this webspace for this page and this show.
OK, well, those of you who know me know that I'm a big fan of Japanese animation, or anime. Well, Sailor Moon is Japanese animation that has been adapted by DIC Entertainment (hereafter referred to as "NegaDIC") after licensing it from Toei animation and the Japanese toy giant, Bandai (hereafter referred to as "NegaBandai"), which makes the Sailor Moon dolls and toys. Well, the show was realeased first in Canada, and then here in the U.S. about a week later via syndication. The show was a tremendous success in Canada, being the top rated show in it's time slots ranging from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in most parts. Sadly, it did not reach this popularity here in the States. Of course, the fact that NegaBandai never advertised during the show, nor did it even advertise the Sailor Moon toys it makes more than a handful of times didn't help the show much. Then again, maybe it was the fact that the show was on at 5:30 in the morning in many areas (such as mine), that caused the low ratings. Whatever it was, Sailor Moon just didn't take off in the States like it did in Canada. Or did it...
Despite the poor support by the producers (Bananas in Pajamas got more advertising time!), the lack of advertising revenue, and the poor time slots, Sailor Moon still managed to gain a large and loyal fan following. Just check out the Official S.O.S. Page, for proof and look at the thousands of signatures they gained on their petition to save the show. Many of us fans either got up extra early or set our VCRs just to watch this show (just ask my friends in Tech House who have borrowed my VCR on Sundays or weeknights). Earlier this year, it looked like this campaign would pay off when Turner Broadcasting (TBS) picked up Sailor Moon and added it to their lineup. Granted, it still had a fairly bad time slot, but at least it was on the air, and TBS reps did say it did have a chance of getting a better time slot if anything in their schedule opened up. However, TBS made the deal on the assumption they would be getting new episodes made. That's when things began to really hit the fan. Negotiations between NegaDIC and NegaBandai broke down, leaving the future of the show up in the air, bringing us to this point...
OK, now, those who know me may wonder why I would support this show. I am known to be an anime "purist" who prefers watching the programs in the original Japanese as opposed to dubbed in English. Well, when I first saw it, I really didn't pay much attention to it, but as I saw more and more the English version grew on me, and I started getting copies of the Japanese version as well. Sadly, it's not easy getting these Japanese tapes, and that's the main reason why I want to keep the show on the air.
Note: If you hear some music in the background, this song is Moon Revenge, which comes from the end of the Sailor Moon R movie, which as far as I know is only available in Japanese. Just thought that it was fitting for this page, and that you might want to know what it was.
