Sea Lettuce
(Ulva lactuca)
Ulva is a thin, leafy green alga that lives on rocks near the low tide mark in sheltered to semi-exposed areas. It does not do well in areas of high wave action because it tears easily. It is quite edible (just like salty, slightly crispy lettuce), although more preferred by benthic herbivores than humans. It also favors areas with increased nutrients, and can occasionally be found on mudflats that have ample nutrient load. It is capable of surviving in brackish water. Intriguing etymological fact: "lactuca" means lettuce, and comes from the Latin for milk ("lac, lactis"), because lettuce has white sap.
